The Collect Call: For the Departed

We tackle one of the most common prayer genres – prayers for those who have died. Can death impair the unity of the church? We think not.

Today’s Prayer

Eternal Lord God, you hold all souls in life: Give to your whole Church in paradise and on earth your light and your peace; and grant that we, following the good examples of those who have served you here and are now at rest, may at the last enter with them into your unending joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

  1. The distinction between heaven and a final resting place is an outgrowth of new creation eschatology. N.T. Wright is a great expositor of this (), the gist of it is that heaven or paradise is an existence between this life and the new creation of Heaven and Earth. So the notion of “give to your whole church in paradise” is maybe a little strange, as those souls would presumably already be in the presence of God, enjoying His glory.
