Holli, Brendan, and special guest Dave Hedges contemplate whether monk seals would make good pets and the lives of monastic orders and Christian communities. Also: we declare war on the dictionary.

  1. I can’t resist a little shout-out to the Order of Julian here, of which I am an Oblate. We say a form of this collect every day, for our Order:

O Lord Jesus Christ, guide and sanctify our brothers and sisters whom you have called to follow you in poverty, chastity, obedience, and prayer in the spirit of Blessed Mother Julian; protect them from danger and want, and grant that by their prayer and service they may enrich your Church, and by their life and worship they may glorify your Name; for you reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The Order of Julian consists of monks and nuns, and also two separate orders of affiliates (Oblates and Associates), living different vows in a way very similar to (if not congruent with — I’m not a canon lawyer) Christian Communities. Our charism is centered around the contemplative tradition in the Church. More information at orderofjulian.org 😀
