The Collect Call: For the Unity of the Church

CollectCall1400x1400

This week’s prayer was written by a former Archbishop of Canterbury, but Holli notes that he may have misinterpreted the Gospel. Plus! We solve a listener’s liturgical mystery.

This week’s collect:

Almighty Father, whose blessed Son before his passion prayed for his disciples that they might be one, as you and he are one: Grant that your Church, being bound together in love and obedience to you, may be united in one body by the one Spirit, that the world may believe in him whom you have sent, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Poor St. Thomas. He shows up the Sunday after Easter when no one comes to church, and his feast day is the shortest day of the year. But this dude did a lot! Between taking Christianity to India and pointing out major theology on John’s Gospel, Thomas deserves better than his bad rap.

Ok, here’s the deal. This collect is mediocre, gratitude is good, but it’s hard under rough circumstances. Here’s how we feel about it. Also: we give you permission to sing (and record) one (1) Christmas carol during Advent. Get our your hymnals, people!

The Collect Call: Church Planting in the Suburbs

The budget passed at General Convention directed significant funding toward church planting. But the Episcopal Church is a little out of the habit, so we don’t have a good feel for what church planting looks like. Here are two examples of the form it might take in the suburbs – we talk to the planters behind Emmaus Episcopal Church in Surprise, Arizona, and Good Samaritan Episcopal Church in Brownsburg, Indiana. Bonus! Find the interview transcript after the jump.
